Estimating foundation systems: footings, piers, mats, and grade beams

A complete reference for the four most common foundation types — what to measure, what to assume, and where the risk hides.

Takeoff: count, with assembly carrying length × width × depth. Parameters: Length, Width, Depth, Top Bars Each Way, Bottom Bars Each Way. Watch for: depth varies by load. Don't assume one footing assembly covers the whole project. Heavy column lines often have a deeper footing than perimeter columns. Soils report flag: allowable bearing pressure. If it's below 2000 psf, your footings will be larger than typical and your dirt scope will be heavier.

Takeoff: linear, in LF. Parameters: Width, Depth, Top Bars, Bottom Bars, Stirrups Spacing. Watch for: corners and intersections. A 3-bar continuous footing has 3 bars in the run plus corner bars at every change of direction. Don't miss them.
