Estimating and CRM: why they belong in one tool
Winning work isn't a takeoff problem or a sales problem. It's both, and the handoff between them is where most subs leak margin and repeat business.
Most concrete and site subs run two systems: one for takeoff and estimating, one — if any — for tracking bids, GC relationships, and follow-ups. Usually the second one is a spreadsheet. Sometimes it's a general-purpose CRM built for tech sales that nobody on the estimating team actually opens.
The result: the estimator does the hard work, sends the proposal, and the follow-up either doesn't happen or happens by accident. Bids die in inboxes.
A CRM built for subs isn't a pipeline board with drag-and-drop cards. It's:
Every project auto-linked to the GC and the estimator who owns it Follow-up cadence that fires on the schedule you'd actually want ("3 days after send, 7 days after send, 14 days after send, closed-lost after 30") Loss reasons tracked as structured data so you can actually see what you're losing on Proposal open/view tracking so you know when to call and when to wait Win-rate broken out by GC, project type, and bid size
