AI takeoff assist vs. full automation: what actually works in 2026

Vendors love the phrase 'AI takeoff.' In practice, the models are great at finding sheets and clustering symbols, and bad at replacing an estimator. Here's where the line is right now.

Every takeoff vendor is now selling "AI takeoff." Some of it is real. Most of the demos you're seeing are cherry-picked on a single clean sheet with a single symbol type, and the marketing team ran the demo forty times to get one good take.

We build Bedrock's AI features in-house. We also use them every day on real bids. Here's an honest split of what the current generation of vision + LLM models can and can't do for construction takeoff.

Sheet finding. Ask "where is the pier schedule?" and the model reads OCR text across the whole set and jumps you to sheet S2.03 in under two seconds. This alone saves 5–10 minutes per bid and is worth turning on.

Symbol clustering. Point the model at one pier callout and ask it to find every match by diameter and label. It won't be perfect, but it'll find 90–95% of the matches and let you confirm or reject each one. Faster than clicking every pier by hand.
